Introduction

Patient-Centered Care is on of the most critical attributes a clinician can possess.  Dealing with a patient’s emotions- in the bio-psychosocial aspect requires a detailed step-by-step acquired skill for both communications and provider-patient relationship(s).

We as a healthcare providers, and as human beings know when something is wrong but how do we convey or conceptualize the patient’s problem?  Once we acknowledge the problem, how do we diagnose it [the problem]?  Although uniquely private and subjective, symptoms and personal concerns are primarily “human” data conceived as factual data.  The challenge for both student and clinician or provider is to keep “human” data foremost –and not (to) rely primarily on physical examinations or laboratory test.

Integrated, patient –centered care is the basis for most interaction- both with new and returning patients; in the ward setting, the clinic, in surgery, with tertiary or primary care, at the emergency room, or for a consultation visit.

This eight day workshop outlines methods that include treating the patient as a person, as well as his or her “dis”-ease.
